Description

Most medical English educators in Japan are now familiar with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and NotebookLM. However, integrating these tools consistently into classroom practice and research workflows remains challenging, particularly in large classes and in a landscape where AI services and capabilities change rapidly. This workshop provides a practical, classroom- and research-oriented introduction for educators who want to move beyond ad hoc use toward more systematic and sustainable integration of AI. I will briefly address current limitations of widely available tools, the implications of rapid platform shifts, and considerations for responsible and pedagogically sound use. Concrete examples will demonstrate how AI can support core teaching tasks (e.g., generating and adapting materials, designing activities) and research processes (e.g., organizing literature, summarizing sources, and generating initial analytic insights). Emphasis is placed on workflows that are scalable and adaptable across institutional contexts. The workshop concludes with a short hands-on activity using publicly available patient narratives (audio and transcripts from the Foreign and Immigrant Patient Narratives corpus, Porter, JSPS KAKENHI JP18K00812). Participants will use AI tools to explore ways of developing teaching materials based on a selected narrative from the corpus. Selected examples may be shared with the group to illustrate different approaches. Participants are encouraged to set up free-tier accounts with NotebookLM (Gemini), Claude (Anthropic) and/or ChatGPT (OpenAI) before attending. As Wi-Fi will not be available during the workshop, participants are also encouraged to use mobile devices or personal hotspots if they wish to take part in the hands-on activity.
