Description

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) is the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray instrument. CTAO’s Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) are specifically designed to observe at the lowest energies accessible to CTAO and to capture fast transient events. To enhance their capabilities, an Advanced SiPM-based Camera is currently under development and requires a robust digital trigger system to cope with the high number of background events observed at the lowest energies. This contribution presents the status of the Central Trigger Processor Board (CTPB), the subsystem responsible for performing both the global camera trigger and the inter-telescope trigger.

We present the final CTPB architecture and the evaluation of several technological approaches through dedicated test benches. Specifically, we explore the potential implementation of custom Machine Learning algorithms on FPGAs, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and clustering techniques, for efficient event discrimination. To achieve high-performance hardware acceleration, we are investigating the deployment of these custom CNN architectures using the AMD Vitis environment. Furthermore, we present preliminary tests on high-speed data transmission, discuss the assessment of different communication protocols, and realistically benchmark the different proposed algorithms. These studies guide the design and fabrication of a future prototype to ensure the CTPB fulfils the LST Advanced Camera's demanding requirements.
