Description

Sensitive soft X-ray polarimetry is expected to understand a wide variety of astrophysical sources in universe. High-performance gas pixel detectors have been used for soft X-ray polarimetry in recent years with the development of electronic technology. The obtained detector data need to be reconstructed to obtain the polarization of the X-ray sources. The traditional approach is to reconstruct the detector data after transmitting them to an offline server from the satellite. However, high-performance detector represents a large amount of data, and it is difficult to downlink all the detector data for reconstruction due to the limitation of the amount of data that can be transmitted via the satellite. In this work, we designed two FPGA-based real-time trace reconstruction solutions. We embedded a real-time trace reconstruction module in the main control FPGA of the Chinese space station X-ray polarization detection system, and this design can complete the online trace reconstruction to get the polarization of the X-ray source without adding additional circuitry. We also designed a separate FPGA trace reconstruction printed circuit boards that can be more widely used in X-ray polarimeter. Both designs can greatly reduce the amount of system data, speed up trace reconstruction and improve real-time performance.
