Safety in Mexico City

Mexico City is generally as safe as—and in some cases safer than—major global metropolises like New York, London, or Paris, provided you exercise standard big-city awareness. The city’s core tourist and business districts are heavily policed and welcoming, though localized crime requires avoiding certain risky neighborhoods

Crime Profiles Compared to Other Global Cities

  • Violent Crime: Mexico City’s homicide rate is making it statistically safer in this regard than many large U.S. cities (e.g., St. Louis, Baltimore, or New Orleans). Violent crimes against tourists remain rare.
  • Petty Theft & Scams: Like Paris, Rome, or London, pickpocketing and scams are the most common issues. You should watch your belongings in crowded areas such as the Centro Histórico or the Metro.
  • Official Advisories: The U.S. Department of State issues a Level 2 travel advisory ("Exercise Increased Caution") for Mexico City, which is the same classification given to major European destinations like France and the UK.

Neighborhood-by-Neighborhood Variations
Safety in Mexico City changes drastically block-by-block. [1]

  • Highly Secure & Tourist-Friendly: Areas like Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Coyoacán, and San Angel are bustling, well-lit, and generally very safe to walk around at night.
  • Exercise Caution: The Centro Histórico is generally safe during the day, but it is best to avoid wandering down unlit, empty streets at night.
  • Areas to Avoid: Neighborhoods like Tepito, Bondojito and Iztapalapa have significantly higher crime rates and are best avoided unless you are with a trusted local guide.

Smart Transit & Travel Practices

  • Avoid Street Hails: Never flag down a random, traditional "libre" taxi off the street. Use ride-sharing apps like Uber or Didi, or use officially registered Sitio taxis to avoid scams and ensure secure routes.
  • Safeguard Valuables: Keep bags zipped and worn in front of you in dense crowds, and avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics openly.

Official Airport Taxis: Purchase your ticket only at the authorized booths located inside the airport arrival terminals. Do not accept rides from drivers waiting outside the terminal building. Ride-Sharing Apps: Uber and Didi operate widely and safely in the area. Please request your ride using the official app while inside the terminal and meet your driver at the designated app-pickup zones.
