Description

In this work we study how the Landau damping effect varies in different space charge regimes for the ISIS synchrotron. The Landau damping effect is one of the fundamental mechanisms of stabilization of accelerator beams. Landau damping occurs when the coherent oscillation frequency is within the incoherent tune spectrum, leading to mode mixing, and reduction of the instability amplitude. Parametric Landau damping of head-tail modes has been studied for simplified accelerators in [1]. In this work, we follow a similar approach, tracking beams already shaped with head-tail modes through space charge elements. The two cases studied were first a simplified 10 cell linear lattice, then a similar linear lattice with ISIS parameters. The Landau damping exponential decay was fit by tracking each mode's amplitude decay with the Xsuite python software, and then studied while varying the space charge strength. The result for the idealized lattice showed good agreement with the strong space charge theory, as seen in [1]. The analysis of the ISIS lattice proved more complicated due to mode mixing.
