Sightseeing in Turku

Public transportation is free for all of our participants!

Here are our recommended sightseeing locations in the Turku area:

Turku Castle

Built as the main bastion of the Swedish Kingdom in Finland, this 13th-century castle houses a museum tracing its history from a medieval fort to a renaissance palace. It is one of the oldest buildings still in use in Finland.

It is at a 10-minute (free) bus ride from the conference venue.

Address: Linnankatu 80, 20100 Turku

Old Turku Open-Air Museum

Luostarinmäki Open-Air Museum consists of several wooden dwellings which survived the great fire of 1827. Each dwelling houses a handicraft exhibition, showcasing how life used to be in Turku in the early 1800s.

It is a 15-minute walk away from the conference venue.

Address: Vartiovuorenkatu 2, 20101 Turku

Resort Town of Naantali

Naantali is a small resort town, known for its old architecture and beautiful alleyways. It is located at a 40-minute (free) bus ride from Turku. Here you can visit the Moomin World park, a must-visit for fans of the Moomin series. You may also visit the Kultaranta Presidential Garden, for which tours are organized by the city of Naantali. Please plan your visit to the Presidential Garden carefully, since it serves as the summer residence of the Finnish President and has rather limited public access.

Moomin World address: Kaivokatu 5, 21101 Naantali

Kultaranta Castle address: Kordelininkatu 1, 21100 Naantali

Paimio Sanatorium

Built in 1933 as a tuberculosis sanatorium, it was designed by the famous Finnish architects Alvar and Aino Aalto. The building and its constituents (e.g., furniture) were innovatively made to accommodate the needs of tuberculosis patients.

It is located at a 1-hour (free) bus ride from Turku.

Address: Alvar Aallontie 275, 21540 Paimio

Tuorla Observatory: Väisälä Space Park and Museum

Established in 1952 by the Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä, the Tuorla Observatory served as the main hub for University of Turku astronomers until 2018. It is now a museum, showcasing the instrumentation projects of Yrjö Väisälä, and hosts a planetarium for outreach purposes. It is located at a 40-minute (free) bus ride from Turku.

We will organize a conference excursion to the Tuorla Observatory.

Address: Väisäläntie 20, 21500 Piikkiö

Please note that some of these locations operate in the summer only, so it is possible that they are still not in full operation by May.
