Travel Information

Airports

The International Airport (Terminal - 2 or T2) and the domestic airport (Terminal -1 or T1) are about 30 km from TIFR. There are various options stated below to get to TIFR and the nearby hotels.

  • App-based Taxis (Ola and Uber) are commonly available (approximate fare ₹1200 from T2 and ₹1000 from T1. The prices vary dynamically based on demand). You can book radio taxis both from inside and outside the airport terminals. All the suggested hotels are in South Mumbai. Specify your destination as i) "your hotel address", if you are going to your hotel, ii) "TIFR, Navy Nagar", if you plan to travel directly to TIFR.

  • There are counters for pre-paid taxis before you exit the arrival hall. Specify your destination as i) "your hotel address", if you are going to your hotel, ii) "Navy Nagar, Colaba", if you plan to travel directly to TIFR. You will be given a receipt for your payment. Retain this till the end of your ride; then hand it over to the taxi driver. At the exit from the airport, the police may want to look at this slip.

  • Various other private taxi counters are also available inside the terminal near the exit gates. If you choose one of them, while buying a ticket please specify your destination as i) "your hotel address", if you are going to your hotel, ii) "TIFR, Navy Nagar", if you plan to travel directly to TIFR.

 

Railway

CSMT (Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus or VT) and Mumbai Central are the nearest railway heads on central and western railways. Taxi service is available from both these stations throughout the day and night. Approx. fare from CSMT (VT) to the institute is ₹100 and from Mumbai Central it will be ₹200 or so.
