Around Vatican II (1962-1965), the community became part of the creation of the sacred space of disused churches. From Vatican II to the first Vatican guidelines on disused churches “Decommissioning and Ecclesial Reuse of Churches” (2018), various European theoretical approaches to the relationship between the community and the sacred space of disused churches have appeared in the documents of the Catholic Church, in the international documents on the cultural heritage and in the scientific publications. Two main tendencies of the theoretical approaches to the creation of the community of the sacred space of disused churches have differed: those, which have been focused on the values of disused churches (Thomas Coomans, Andrea Longhi) or on the look at the sacred space of disused churches (Albert Gerhards, Gianfranco Ravasi). Pope Francis went beyond a concrete sacred space of disused churches and looked at it as a work of art of the whole world. Pope Francis in his book “La mia idea di arte” said that art does not reject nothing and anyone. The community can discard a church but the sacred space of disused church will never discard the community. This trans-disciplinary approach on disused churches turns our perspective upside down from the discard sacred space to the discard community. It focuses no longer on the creation of new communities but on the re-creation of the dignity of the existing communities of the disused sacred spaces through the contemplative look at the reality and at the dream of the disused sacred spaces of the world. The aim of the presentation is to analyse the contribution of the approach of Pope Francis to the history of the theoretical research on the community of the sacred space of disused churches.

In 2015, obtained a master’s degree in the Cultural heritage of the Church at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (Italy). There at this moment she is preparing her doctoral dissertation “The New Dignity of Disused Churches: Counter the Throwaway Culture”. From 2021 to 2022, she curated permanent and temporary exhibitions, led the programs of the conservation, valorisation and education to the cultural heritage and the tours at the Shrine of Our Lady of Šiluva (Lithuania). Since 2026, she has been working as a cultural heritage specialist in the Movable Objects Division of the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. The research areas are the methodologies of the experience of Christian visual art and the history of the theory of the sacred space and Romano Guardini’s philosophy of religion.
