Genius Loci 2.0: lugares e significados

  • Arquiteturas

    ARQ

    Esta secção pretende refletir a pluralidade de materializações da Arquitetura desde a Idade Média até à Época Contemporânea, com particular incidência no contexto Ibérico e Europeu.

    Convocam-se, assim, os mais amplos contributos focados em realidades regionais, estudos de síntese ou os estudos de caso dos mais significativos exemplos de arquiteturas.

    Serão também acolhidos os trabalhos que incidam sobre os desafios do estudo destas realidades, nomeadamente o estudo das estruturas já desaparecidas ou parcialmente destruídas; o seu estudo através de fontes primárias e das materialidades remanescentes; a criação de modelos virtuais de salvaguarda e acessibilidade (Digital Twins e Visitas Virtuais). Algumas sugestões de temas são:

    • Técnicas construtivas;
    • Arquitetura militar;
    • Arquitetura religiosa;
    • Arquitetura do ferro e devantures;
    • Tendências atuais da arquitetura;
    • Arquitetura civil

    This section aims to reflect the plurality of architectural manifestations from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Era, with a particular focus on the Iberian and European context.

    Therefore, we are calling for the broadest contributions focused on regional realities, synthesis studies, or case studies of the most significant examples of architecture.

    Submissions will also be accepted that focus on the challenges of studying these realities, namely the study of structures that have already disappeared or been partially destroyed; their study through primary sources and remaining material remains; and the creation of virtual models for safeguarding and accessibility (Digital Twins and Virtual Tours). Some suggested themes are:

    • Construction techniques;
    • Military architecture;
    • Religious architecture;
    • Iron architecture and devantures;
    • Current trends in architecture;
    • Civil architecture.

  • Espaços sacros

    ESP

    Os Espaços Sacros são realidades vivas e mutáveis, sujeitas ao devir. Estes lugares naturais e/ou construídos, que recebem rituais programados, conferem significado a uma comunidade e materializam a ligação entre o tempo terreno e o tempo da transcendência.

    A reflexão sobre a evolução e transformação dos espaços sacros, a natureza e motivações das suas criações, a relação entre as formas e os seus significados, as dinâmicas das transformações e a acumulação de programas artísticos ocupa atualmente um assinalável interesse nos estudos da arquitetura, das artes aplicadas, da cultura visual e dos ritos devocionais.

    Esta secção acolhe comunicações que se centrem na investigação dos espaço sacros numa longa diacronia e num amplo espectro geográfico, privilegiando uma visão holística e integrada dos seguintes tópicos:

    • análise e interpretação das formas e significados;
    • articulação com os rituais;
    • transformações histórico-artísticas;
    • usos contemporâneos;
    • sacralidade e turismo.

    Sacred spaces are living and changing realities, dependent on the passage of time. These natural and/or man-made places, which host scheduled rituals, give meaning to a community and embody the connection between terrestrial and transcendence time.

    The reflection about the evolution and change of sacred spaces, the nature and motivations behind their creation, the relationship between forms and their meanings, the dynamics of renovation, and the accumulation of artistic programmes is currently a subject of considerable interest in the study of architecture, applied arts, visual culture, and devotional rites.

    This section welcomes papers focusing on the study of sacred spaces across a long period of time and a broad geographical spectrum, favouring a holistic and integrated view of the following topics:

    • analysis and interpretation of forms and meanings;
    • connection with rituals;
    • historical and artistic transformations;
    • contemporary uses;
    • holiness and tourism.

  • Gestão do Património

    PAT

    A secção Gestão do Património acolhe contributos que se enquadrem nos Estudos Críticos do Património e proponham uma reflexão aprofundada sobre modelos, práticas e instrumentos contemporâneos de gestão patrimonial, considerando os desafios conceptuais, epistemológicos, sociais e tecnológicos que atravessam as Ciências e Técnicas do Património na atualidade.

    Num contexto de crescente complexidade social, cultural e ambiental, a gestão do património é entendida como um processo dinâmico e situado, que articula conhecimento científico, enquadramentos institucionais, políticas públicas e práticas sociais.

    Acolhem-se trabalhos que abordem a gestão do património em contextos de mudança, a transformação dos modelos de governança, as relações entre preservação, educação e mediação cultural, bem como os desafios colocados pelas tecnologias digitais, sustentabilidade e responsabilidade social. Esperam-se contributos que articulem reflexão teórica consistente com análise de práticas, estudos de caso ou processos em curso. São bem-vindas propostas provenientes de diferentes áreas disciplinares que mobilizem perspetivas críticas, interdisciplinares e reflexivas.

    The Heritage Management section welcomes contributions that fall within the scope of Critical Heritage Studies and offer an in-depth reflection on contemporary models, practices, and instruments of heritage management, considering the conceptual, epistemological, social, and technological challenges currently facing Heritage Sciences and Techniques.

    In a context of increasing social, cultural, and environmental complexity, heritage management is understood as a dynamic and situated process that articulates scientific knowledge, institutional frameworks, public policies, and social practices.

    We welcome papers that address heritage management in contexts of change, the transformation of governance models, the relationships among preservation, education, and cultural mediation, as well as the challenges posed by digital technologies, sustainability, and social responsibility. Contributions are expected to combine theoretical reflection with analysis of practices, case studies, or ongoing processes. Proposals from different disciplinary areas that mobilise critical, interdisciplinary and reflective perspectives are welcome.

  • Imagens e Contextos

    O objetivo principal deste painel consiste em compreender como a integração das imagens nos seus diversos suportes, espaços e contextos revela práticas performativas de índole identitária e comunicativa ao longo de uma ampla cronologia, da Pré-História à Contemporaneidade. A imagem é entendida como veículo de ideias que circulam entre diferentes universos socioculturais, permitindo examinar modos de produção, receção, circulação e fruição, bem como as linguagens visuais que daí emergem e circulam.

    A crescente disseminação da imagem mediatizada tem originado desafios teóricos que impulsionaram várias viragens epistemológicas, ampliando os estudos da cultura visual, em âmbitos crescentemente diversos, desde os meios digitais às conceções renovadas das materialidades, passando pela vida longa das imagens.

    Considerando a imagem como expressão e documento antropológico, polissémico e multicultural, e reconhecendo a sua centralidade nas ciências sociais e humanas na atualidade, este painel convoca abordagens multi-, inter- e transdisciplinares para explorar criticamente o binómio imagens e contextos.

    This panel aims to understand how the integration of images across different media, spaces, and contexts reveals performative practices of identity and communication throughout a broad chronology, from Prehistory to the Contemporary Age. Images are approached as vehicles for ideas circulating among diverse sociocultural worlds, enabling the analysis of modes of production, reception, circulation, and appreciation, as well as the visual languages that emerge and travel from them.

    The growing dissemination of the mediatised image has generated theoretical challenges that have driven several epistemological shifts, expanding visual culture’s study into increasingly diverse fields—from digital media to renewed conceptions of materiality and the long life of images.

    Considering the image as an anthropological, polysemic, and multicultural expression and document, and recognising its relevance within the social sciences and humanities today, this panel invites multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary approaches to critically explore the relationship between images and contexts.

  • Mundos de transição

    MUN

    A História da Humanidade, numa visão cíclica, é pontuada por momentos de mudança que geram ruturas culturais e sociais de alcances diversos. Estas transições promovem a transformação de estruturas, tecnologias, modos de vida e identidades.

    Em arqueologia, tais transições são apreendidas pelo estudo das materialidades, permitindo considerar e problematizar novos desenvolvimentos culturais e o influxo de novas ideias. Podem, ainda, ser identificadas através de alterações ambientais, naturais ou decorrentes da ação antrópica nos territórios.

    Uma compreensão aprofundada das transições requer a consideração de distintas escalas temporais e a interação de forças dinâmicas que operam em paralelo, a curto, médio e longo prazo, à semelhança do modelo de Fernand Braudel para o Mundo Mediterrânico.

    Human history, viewed cyclically, is punctuated by moments of change that generate cultural and social ruptures of varying scope. These transitions promote the transformation of structures, technologies, lifestyles, and identities.

    In archaeology, such transitions are understood through the study of material remains, allowing for the consideration and problematization of new cultural developments and the influx of new ideas. They can also be identified through environmental changes, whether natural or resulting from human activity in the territories.

    A thorough understanding of transitions requires consideration of distinct time scales and the interaction of dynamic forces operating in parallel in the short-, medium-, and long-term, similar to Fernand Braudel's model of the Mediterranean World.

  • Vernacular

    VER

    O universo do que classificamos como vernacular é ilusório e frequentemente inconspícuo: faz parte do nosso quotidiano social, das paisagens que percorremos e onde gravita a nossa vida. Contudo, esta proximidade tende a camuflá-lo, apenas readquirindo importância quando ameaçado de desaparecimento, e soam os alarmes sobre o que estamos prestes a perder.

    Faz parte de um passado/presente que ainda alcançamos, mas tende a esfumar-se nas dinâmicas do presente, levando com ele parte da nossa identidade cultural. Com efeito, o vernacular é, sobretudo, identitário, plasmado nas paisagens humanizadas, que Carlos Alberto Ferreira de Almeida classificou como “sacralizadas”, mas também contido em tudo o que faz parte da vida cultural, seja de configuração material ou imaterial. O espaço é a âncora para a articulação trinomial com o processo e com o tempo, em torno dos quais se concentra esta secção do congresso Genius Loci.

    O vernacular desdobra-se em amplas e diversificadas frentes temáticas, as quais esta secção pretende acolher, em enquadramento crítico e multi-disciplinar.

    The universe of what we classify as vernacular is illusory and often inconspicuous: it is part of our daily social life, the landscapes we traverse, and the places where our lives revolve. However, this proximity tends to camouflage it, only regaining importance when threatened with disappearance, and alarms sound about what we are about to lose.

    Vernacular is part of a past/present we can still reach, but tends to fade away amongst the dynamics of the present, while taking with it a piece of our cultural identity. In fact, vernacular is, above all, identitarian, portrayed in all humanised landscapes, the ones Carlos Alberto Ferreira de Almeida named "sacralized", but is also incorporated into the whole of our material and immaterial social life. Landscape is the anchor for the three-way interaction with process and with time, thus being the core for the theme of this congress Genius Loci. Genius Loci.

    Vernacular unfolds across broad and varied themes that can be viewed through critical and multidisciplinary perspectives, which this section of the congress is keen to welcome.

  • Paisagens, territórios & mobilidades

    PTM

    A mobilidade articula-se com a apreensão da paisagem e a produção de representações do território. Os percursos e meios de comunicação guiam o movimento e ancoram-no em pontos fixos ou semi-fixos, assumindo formas diversas conforme os tempos históricos e pré-históricos.

    À luz da hodografia, a via é também o acto de caminhar e faz parte da paisagem, com significado social, artístico e patrimonial. Mapas, desenhos e, mais tarde, a fotografia operam como meios de transmissão e comunicação dessas experiências individuais e colectivas, reforçando o sentido de território, de lugar e das transformações.

    A sessão acolhe abordagens transdisciplinares e antropológicas sobre: (1) intercâmbios de curta, média e longa distância; (2) criação, incorporação e manutenção de percursos; (3) percursos e lugares na definição do território; (4) pontos de ancoragem da viagem; (5) paisagens na pintura e na fotografia; (6) paisagens descritas em textos; (7) territórios na longa duração, cruzando abordagens de ecossistemas e suas correlativas transformações tecnológicas, sociopolíticas e ideológicas.

    Mobility is linked to understanding the landscape and to the production of representations of the territory. Routes and means of communication guide movement and anchor it to fixed or semi-fixed points, taking on diverse forms according to historical and pre-historical times.

    From a hodographic perspective, the route encompasses both the act of walking and forms part of the landscape, bearing social, artistic and heritage significance. Maps, drawings and, subsequently, photography operate as means of transmitting and communicating these individual and collective experiences, reinforcing the sense of territory, place and transformations.

    The session welcomes transdisciplinary and anthropological approaches addressing: (1) short, medium and long-distance exchanges; (2) creation, incorporation and maintenance of routes; (3) routes and places in territorial definition; (4) journey anchorage points; (5) landscapes in painting and photography; (6) landscapes described in texts; (7) territories in the longue durée, integrating ecosystem approaches and their correlative technological, sociopolitical and ideological transformations.
