Description
LhARA is an interdisciplinary collaboration developing a radiobiology research facility to address the biological and technological challenges associated with accessible and efficacious proton and ion therapy. To achieve this goal, LhARA is developing a new fixed-field alternating-gradient (FFA) accelerator designed to provide beams with widely variable characteristics. Preliminary studies of the LhARA FFA did not include space-charge effects. However, previous beam-dynamics simulations of the upstream section of the LhARA beamline have shown that space charge can affect the beam dynamics. Therefore, we present initial results from beam-dynamics simulations of the LhARA FFA, including space-charge effects and without RF acceleration, performed using RF-Track. Those results show that the beam size remains stable over 50 turns in the FFA.
