Description

The Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) relies on swap-out injection, which requires consistent delivery of high-charge bunches (up to 20 nC) from the injector chain, including the linac, Particle Accumulator Ring (PAR), and booster. At these charge levels, achieving sufficiently short bunch duration (<600 ps) becomes challenging, as compression with the 12th-harmonic cavity alone is not adequate.
In this work, we explore RF-based techniques to further compress the bunch near extraction in the PAR. By modulating the voltage and/or phase of the 12th-harmonic cavity, additional longitudinal compression can be achieved. We present simulation results along with initial experimental observations demonstrating this effect.
