Things to Do Around UCLA During AAC 2026
AAC 2026 will take place at UCLA, just a few miles from the beach and many of Los Angeles’ best museums, hikes, restaurants, and neighborhoods. Participants who have time before or after the workshop — especially those arriving early on Sunday — may want to explore some of the local area.
Please note that all activities listed below are optional and at participants’ own expense. For most destinations, Uber/Lyft is usually the easiest option. Please check travel times, opening hours, reservation requirements, and local conditions before going.
Optional Surf Lessons — Tuesday Morning
To help participants experience a classic part of Los Angeles culture, we are organizing an optional early-morning surf lesson in Santa Monica.
Taking a break from accelerator physics to catch some waves is one of the perks of being in LA.
We have partnered with Eduardo from Lazy Boys Surf, a local instructor, for a beginner-friendly session before the conference schedule begins.
Date: Tuesday, July 28
Time: 6:00 AM – 8:30 AM
Location: 20 Bicknell Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401
Cost: $90 per person, paid by each participant
Included: wetsuit, surfboard, land lesson, and water coaching
The lesson is designed for beginners, but participants with some surfing experience are also welcome. Eduardo can adjust the instruction to help different skill levels.
Space is limited to 10 participants per session, and sign-up is first come, first served. If there is strong interest, we will look into adding additional sessions.
Safety is the top priority. If ocean conditions are rough, the instructor may limit water supervision to a maximum of 6 participants in the water at one time.
Interested participants should add their name to the sign-up sheet here:

Los Angeles is spread out, and travel times can vary significantly with traffic. For many of the destinations above, rideshare is the simplest option. Participants should plan ahead, check current hours and reservation requirements, and allow extra time when traveling across the city.
