The Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astroparticle Physics Research Institute is delighted to invite you to the National Meeting at Queen's University from August 8-10, celebrating the exceptional research progress achieved over the past seven years in astroparticle physics. This event, encompassing a dozen international collaborations and numerous theoretical breakthroughs, is open to all members of the Canadian astroparticle physics research community. 

 

The meeting will feature morning research keynotes and update presentations, followed by afternoon plenary sessions addressing long-term community priorities for science support, equitable working environments, HQP career mobility, and funding strategies. These sessions are designed to keep you informed about the overall research progress of the national community and to actively engage you in the Institute's planning for its next decade of work.

Science Communications Workshop: Science Communication Workshop - Biosciences Atrium

(BioSciences Atrium) This workshop explores the role of communication in career advancement and networking. Rather than solely explaining scientific concepts, it encourages sharing research stories, challenges, and creative solutions with potential employers, collaborators, and granting agencies. It promotes discussing difficulties faced in work as a way to foster deeper, more productive connections, as this invites others to offer perspectives or connect with resources. This approach enhances memory recall, probelm-solving, leadership development, as well as fostering lasting professional relationships.

1 Communicating Challenges (Connection Building, Self-Assessment)

The first part of the workshop develops techniques for establishing deeper professional relationships through strategic communication. Starting with an ice-breaking exercise, we'll focus on communicating challenges for building connections. Participants will identify their own challenges in an interactive session with Nanci Corrigan, with exercises for practical application.

2 PANEL: Communications Best-Practices in Professional Life

We work in a discipline of Big Ideas and far-reaching research -- are there any good ways to make the day-to-day practices of communicating incremental steps, distracting side-issues and and procedural necessities not only pleasantly tolerable, but actually professionally rewarding and (just maybe) inspiring? Our panel reflects on a broad range of experiences in the research world to share useful habits, hacks and perspectives that turn ordinary networking events into delightful treasure hunts to unlock our own professional potential as well as that of our colleagues.

KAIROS Blanket Exercise Workshop

The Blanket Exercise is an experiential teaching tool that explores Indigenous perspectives and experiences. Developed collaboratively by Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, it incorporates themes from reports such as the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Participants physically step onto blankets representing the land and assume different roles, engaging emotionally and intellectually. The exercise fosters awareness, understanding, and empathy regarding the shared history of Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Versions of the exercise exist both in-person and virtually, with the virtual experience often being highly effective. Trigger warnings are provided due to the sensitive nature of the topics covered.
