Material
We will be working on the Icelandic manuscript AM 343 a 4to from the second half of the 15th century, a monumental collection of legendary sagas, chivalric romances and a moral fable. The manuscript has been associated with the church farm Möðruvellir fram in Eyjafjörður, North Iceland, a major center of late-medieval Icelandic literature and manuscript production.
Our group aims to train the first model for late-medieval Icelandic to be eventually made available on Transkribus. We will then experiment with and analyze the outputs to give you hands-on experience in contributing to a newly trained model, as well as valuable analytical skills that can be used to improve future models.
Requirements
Sufficient knowledge of Old Norse palaeography and orthography to manually compare and correct a set number of page transcriptions of a late medieval manuscript. We will provide support and materials for difficult sections or abbreviations.
Good knowledge of the Old Icelandic language or any other related dialect, as you will correct automatic transcriptions.
In-person workshop in January
In addition, we plan to hold an in-person workshop at the University of Iceland on 18–19 January 2027.
