Material
This year, the Late medieval Latin group will work on a selection of various material from the late middle ages (14-15th century) with exceprts ca 10-20 pages long per manuscript/hand. The manuscripts contain various texts connected to the intellectual life of the Middle Ages:
- University position
- Theological treatise
- Church sermons
- Medieval chronicle
- Latin grammar
- Latin dictionary from the Middle Ages
The excerpts will be selected in the way that the majority of them will contain the text already known and available either as an edition or as a transcription.
Tasks of the participants
Each participant will choose one of the texts (10 pages/5 folios) that they will have to transcribe
Additionally, they will correct other two texts (i.e. each excerpt will have two proof readers). The dataset will be then published on Zenodo (with names of its contributors) and used for training of the models.
In addition, participants will read a couple of research articles on the topic that will be discussed shortly in the sessions.
Transcription Tools and Transcription Guidelines
We will use both Transkribus and eScriptorium in our group, we will follow semi-diplomatic transcription guidelines as established by Tim Geelhaar for Carolingian Latin group with small modifications. This will allow us to combine data from both datasets.
Requirements
We expect intermediate knowledge of Latin palaeography and Latin language. If you are in doubt, contact us in advance.
No previous experience with HTR is required.
