High-order transverse-mode lasers are important tools for a wide range of emerging applications, motivating continued efforts toward simple and flexible control of structured laser fields. Recently, we have developed a general approach for arbitrary high-order mode generation based on cavity-symmetry control and selective mode excitation. By deliberately introducing intracavity astigmatism,...

While traditionally developed for astronomy use cases, photonic lanterns are finding use in a wider range of fields, leveraging their spatial mode demultiplexing (SPADE) capabilities.

We explore the use of mode-selective lanterns as the SPADE receiver for the displacement sensing of levitated nanoparticles [1]. When collecting the scattered light from a trapped particle, it has been shown...

The reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) distributions of scattering properties in diffuse media remains a challenge in biomedical imaging. There is considerable interest in improved optical imaging methods for breast cancer detection, as conventional X-ray mammography exposes patients to ionising radiation and may cause discomfort, discouraging regular screening. However, the highly...

The CSIRO Mineral Resources Sensing and Sorting Group has developed a patented X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology, that moves laboratory scale EDXRD to on-stream mineral analysis in processing plants. The removal of inefficient and labour-intensive laboratory-based XRD is imperative for a mine site as this allows stream mineralogy to be monitored in real-time.

    Alongside XRD, CSIRO has...

Event cameras report pixel-level log-intensity threshold crossings asynchronously, offering benefits in dynamic range, sensing latency, and data bandwidth. The conventional trade-off between sensing frequency and signal intensity is replaced by balancing contrast thresholds and temporal filtering, opening new possibilities for dynamic applications.
    Computational optical imaging has long...
