Description
Exceptional points (EPs) are non-Hermitian spectral singularities where two or more complex eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvectors coalesce. EPs and related topological phenomena continue to be investigated in a wide range of experimental settings. This talk will cover recent work on locating EPs in the eigenspectrum of free fermion quantum spin chains. At EPs the Hamiltonian becomes non-diagonalisable in the Jordan block sense. The counting of eigenstates then requires the derivation of the Jordan normal form and construction of associated generalised eigenvectors, allowing an exact treatment of various EP phenomena.
