This paper critically assesses the role of animals in graphic representations (rock art and portable art) from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age in the Lower Douro basin and Northern Portugal. The analysis unfolds over the longue durée, spanning the 10th to the 1st millennium BC. Beginning with an overview of current knowledge on the Mesolithic and Early Neolithic (c. 10,000–4,800/4,600 BC), a period in which humans/anthropomorphs begin to take precedence over animals, it proceeds with a parallel graphical and ideological assessment of the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd millennia BC, during which zoomorphs almost disappear. A close interaction with animals — particularly horses, wild boars, and cervids — is, by contrast, clearly attested in the Iron Age. The inclusion of this paper in this section is justified by the fact that, across this extended timeframe, the variation of animals within paths and their respective loci reveals at least three dominant association models. The identification and critical evaluation of these models constitute the central contribution of this paper.

Maria de Jesus Sanches is an Associate Professor of Porto University, Portugal, and CITCEM researcher, with 40 years of experience in teaching and researching Prehistoric rock Art and Archaeology. PhD in Archaeology and Prehistory (1995) and Aggregation in Prehistoric Art-Megalithic Art (2006). Master Course Director in Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Porto University: 2008-2010, and 2018-current date. Doctorate/PhD Course Director in Archaeology: 2010-2017. She has supervised several Master and PhD theses, with emphasis on those whose themes focus on post-paleolithic rock art, but also paleolithic. She directed several archaeological research projects—megalithic constructions, settlements, rock art— in close relation with the respective paleo-ecosystems, particularly in the North of Portugal. She has authored more than a hundred of papers and five books in Prehistory.
