Abandoned historical buildings in post-communist Romania have become a widespread phenomenon. Their lack of utility and functionality renders them increasingly uncomfortable in the economic dynamics of contemporary urban life, particularly as they continue to shape and delimit the public space. They are no longer perceived as assets, but often regarded as burdens. At the same time, the absence of proper stewardship, insufficiant funds, vandalism, and sometimes public indifference, contribute to their gradual decay. This process may ultimately lead to their disappearance, liberating urban space from the burden of agonising history.
This study aims to investigate the notion of historicide according to the model offered by Richard N. Haass in The Politics of Historicide, (2017), and applying it to the context of built heritage, but through the phenomenon of abandoned historical buildings. It asks whether the abandonment of heritage buildings can be understood as a form of historicide. Furthermore, it explores whether such processes contribute to the destruction of the social fabric, potentially undermining values, cultural symbols, identity and a sense of belonging?
