Newer Serbian architecture has developed through the work of creative protagonists from numerous professional fields. Expressed via the roles of architects, theorists, and critics, stylistic paradigms were examined, applied, and complexified. In accordance with the specific history of the region, Serbian architecture is essentially ambiguous and polymorphic, and many historical attempts at uniformity were questioned and often rejected a priori.
Abstract philosophical conceptions of the genius loci are represented both in global and Serbian architectural historiography, but their essence is inherently multi-layered and often imprecisely comprehended. As such, they are often interwoven within cultural contexts and specific styles that marked the previous eras. Accordingly, through the re-examination of theoretical models, the paper is devoted to the correlation between practices in the construction of spatial narratives. Their historical and contemporary patterns, and the specific characteristics that shaped architectural-urban matrices, are presented and valorized.
During the decades of examination, stylistic fluctuations in domestic architecture were closely related to the layered identity of the Serbian people, especially until the beginning of the Second World War. Public buildings, sacred religious spaces, memorials of fallen soldiers and civilians in the Balkan Wars and the Great War, as well as examples of residential architecture, were often shaped following the visual components of national history. In particular, the paper focuses on the perception of the genius loci phenomenon through the identity dichotomies of the newer and contemporary Serbian architecture, incorporated in shifting from the cultural patterns of the region, to approaching the globalist currents of impersonalized architecture.

MA Anđela M. Dukić (1997), PhD candidate of the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, under the mentorship of Professor Aleksandar Kadijević, PhD. Her field of research encompasses Serbian and Yugoslav architecture of the 20th century, with emphasis on architectural theory and criticism, as well as the phenomena of post-war industrial heritage and globalization practices in contemporary architecture. She has participated in numerous conferences in the home country and abroad, and has published a series of scientific papers and book reviews in national and international scientific journals and collections of papers, both in the native and English languages. Since 2024, she has been an associate member of Matica Srpska, and since 2025, she has held the title of Junior Researcher. At the beginning of 2026, she became a member of The Applied Artists and Designers Association of Serbia.
