Description

Lead, the most commonly used shielding material from gamma radiation, still lacks a firm inclusive electron-neutrino charged-current cross-section measurement. The COHERENT collaboration indirectly measured this cross section by hunting for the secondary neutrons produced from the interaction with Eljen Cell and Lead Neutrino Cubes detectors. Surprisingly, the combined measurement was almost a third of the expected value. The upcoming NEP-ton experiment, a 640 kg repurposed lead glass detector at the SNS, will pursue this cross section by detecting the primary leptons produced in this interaction. This is made possible by employing lead glass modules that serve as both target material and the detecting medium, due to the glass’s transparency to the Cherenkov radiation produced by the primary lepton.
