Getting to Manchester

Manchester is a major UK city with excellent transport links, making it easy to reach by train, air, or road. The University of Manchester is located in the city centre, along Oxford Road. The main venue for the workshop is the Jocelyn Bell Burnell Lecture Theatre, in the Schuster Building. Detailed public transport information can be found at this link. 

By Air
Manchester Airport (MAN) is well-connected to many international and domestic destinations. It is located about 10 miles south of the city centre. From the airport:

  • Train: Direct trains run regularly to Manchester Piccadilly Station (approx. 20 minutes).

  • Taxi: Around 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

  • Tram: The Metrolink tram runs to various parts of the city. Note the tram dose NOT run to the University. 


By Train
Manchester has three main stations:

  • Manchester Piccadilly (main intercity hub)

  • Manchester Oxford Road 

  • Manchester Victoria

Direct trains run from London Euston (~2 hours), Birmingham (~1.5 hours) and Edinburgh (~3.5 hours)


By Car
Manchester is accessible via the M6, M60, and M62 motorways. Parking is available at Booth Street West Car Park and the Aquatic Centre Car Park. Overnight parking is possible in both of these. 

Getting to Campus Once You Are In Manchester
If you are staying at the Hyatt Regency, you will already be within walking distance. Likewise most hotels within the city centre will also be within a 15 - 20 minute walk. If you wish to catch a bus, the Bee Network coordinates local bus transportation within Manchester.
