Multi-spectral coherent optical transition radiation (CTR) imaging measurements have revealed the three-dimensional structure of microbunched electron beams produced by laser wakefield accelerators. However, accurate and unique reconstruction of the 3D structure requires prior knowledge of the longitudinal bunch profile, which is only accessible under certain conditions. A general approach for measuring the longitudinal profile is through spectral measurements of CTR. The spectrum of CTR depends on the bunch form factor, which encodes information about the longitudinal profile of the electron bunch. Therefore, by measuring the CTR spectrum, one can obtain the form factor, and subsequently reconstruct the longitudinal profile via an inverse Fourier transform, typically with assumptions about the missing phase information. We experimentally measured the CTR spectrum in the optical range and reconstructed the longitudinal profile of the electron bunches, providing essential information for the general approach of the reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure of microbunched electrons.
