High-energy narrow-divergence electron beam generation from high intensity solid target interactions using the ZEUS laser system

Description

Measurements of energetic electron beams from 2 PW laser interactions with solid targets are presented. The experiments were conducted using the Zetawatt Equivalent Ultrashort pulsed laser System (ZEUS) at the University of Michigan with a very long focal length (f/70) focusing geometry and a peak intensity of about 10^19 W/cm^2. Very narrow divergence electron beams ( theta ~ 10 mrad) with energies in excess of 50 MeV were measured from the front surface of the target in the near specular direction. This beam energy was much higher than the ponderomotive energy of the laser pulse. Along with the electron beam, highly directional low order harmonic emission was also simultaneously measured in the specular direction. Preliminary numerical modeling of these interactions will also be presented.
