Higher-order modes (HOMs), typically damped because they can induce beam instabilities in accelerators, can instead be exploited as an additional control mechanism to enhance ballistic bunch compression. In this work, we investigate the use of HOM fields to improve longitudinal phase space control in RF gun-based systems. Using particle tracking simulations, we characterize the dependence of key observables—such as energy chirp and phase space distortion—on RF control parameters and identify operating regimes where enhanced longitudinal phase-space control is achievable. In addition, simulations are conducted over a range of beam charges to quantify the impact of space charge on controllability and to establish practical limits on achievable compression quality.
