Description

Electroformed copper is used in the fabrication of corrugated waveguide (CWG) structures for the 180 GHz A-STAR wakefield accelerator project at Argonne National Laboratory. Understanding the RF conductivity of electroformed copper at millimeter-wave frequencies is essential for accurate prediction of attenuation of electromagnetic waves and thermal load produced by the electron beam propagating through the CWG. Multiple 1.4 m-long OFHC copper and electroformed copper WR5 waveguide samples were fabricated, and their scattering parameters were measured using a vector network analyzer and compared. A 15% reduction in electrical conductivity of the electroformed copper relative to bulk OFHC copper was determined with a measurement uncertainty of ±7%. One electroformed copper sample and one OFHC sample were subsequently subjected to one thermal cycle reaching 365°C and remeasured.
