Description

This research concerns the development of compact industrial SRF e-beam accelerators at the IARC of Fermilab.

High-power electron beams (e-beams) are useful for many industrial applications, such as medical device sterilization, PFAS destruction, and pavement reinforcement. Superconducting radio frequency (SRF) e-beam accelerators are better suited for these applications than are normal-conducting alternatives. SRF accelerators are usually cooled via cryogenic fluid baths, but the Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC) of Fermilab has demonstrated a novel, cryocooler conduction cooling system that offers several important advantages.

This poster will present IARC’s conduction-cooled 1.5-cell SRF cavity accelerator and discuss the role of conduction cooling in improving the practicality and industrial viability of SRF accelerator technology.
