Arriving to Jyväskylä

Flights to Helsinki and a train to Jyväskylä

Helsinki airport (HEL) is the main international airport in Finland. It is located in Vantaa around 17 km north of the Helsinki city centre and is often called as Helsinki-Vantaa airport.

Local (HSL) P train from the airport to Tikkurila

After exiting the restricted arrival area, walk along the hall on the arrival floor following the train/railway station signs. After a few minutes of walking (about 100 m) there will be an escalator down to the underground station for the local trains.

There are two train lines, both going to Helsinki as the final destination but traveling in the opposite directions: the P-line and the I-line. It is important that you take the P train! When you come down with the escalator, the platform for the P-train will be on the right-hand  side. The departures are every 10 minutes during the working days. Take the first available P-train to Tikkurila station.

Tikkurila (or Dickursby in Swedish) will be the third stop after the airport. The trip will last only 8 minutes. At the Tikkurila station the P-train will usually stop at the platform #6.

Long-distance trains to Jyväskylä

The train to Jyväskylä usually leaves from platform #2 in Tikkurila but it is always good to check the information screens at the Tikkurila station.

The trains to Jyväskylä go via Tampere. Some trains are direct, other connections require switching to another train in Tampere. The connection times are short but since the trains wait for one another, there should be no problems with the change. For direct trains, it is good to know that the train changes its direction in Tampere.

How to buy the train tickets?

We recommend to buy the train tickets online using the VR online platform right after booking the flights. There are also vending machines at the airport but some of the trains may be fully booked if  you try to purchase the tickets just before the departure.

• Buy the ticket from "Helsinki Airport" to "Jyväskylä". This will cover both the local (HSL) P train from the airport to Tikkurila and the VR long-distance train from Tikkurila to Jyväskylä.

• When purchased well in advance, the price for the trip (Helsinki Airport → Jyväskylä) is only 13.30 €. Closer to the departure day the price of a one-way trip will go up to about 43 €, or even higher.
• There is no discount for purchasing a return ticket at the same time
• Important: a specific departure time of the P-train (local commuter train) will be stated on your ticket. Nevertheless, you may use an earlier train (within +-80 minutes). In fact, we recommend you to go to the Tikkurila station as soon as possible and rather wait there for the train to Jyväskylä.
• The timetable is available on the same page as train tickets
• The journey takes about 3 – 3.5 hours
• The last train from Tikkurila towards Jyväskylä departs at around 19:04.

Flights to Jyväskylä airport via Helsinki

Jyväskylä (Tikkakoski) airport is a small airport located around  21 km north from the Jyväskylä city centre.
