Summary
Non-leptonic kaon decays involve an interesting interplay of physics at long and short distances. We review the present understanding
of the dominant kaon decays into two pions, using well-defined approximations based on chiral symmetry and the large-$N_c$ expansion, and compare it with
the results obtained in recent lattice simulations. An updated value of $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ is provided.
