This tutorial provides students with an essential introduction to kilonovae. After a brief overview of observational highlights, I will introduce the theoretical foundations of the kilonova phenomenon. I will then survey the main modelling frameworks currently in use, progressing from simpler to more sophisticated approaches. The tutorial concludes with a hands-on component, where students will work directly with a simple kilonova model and explore how the physical parameters shape the lightcurve. There will be a lunch break from 12 to 14.
