Description

While the fundamental limits to atomic clock stability resulting from measurement noise are by now well understood, the limits imposed by the feedback mechanism itself have received only a relatively fragmented treatment.
Here we develop a general description of noise in atomic clocks that arises whenever the feedback is time dependent, i.e. in violation of the assumptions of linear time invariant control.
Our framework unifies and generalises the Dick effect that arises due to dead time during clock interrogation, and the intermodulation effect that occurs in clocks interrogated via modulation spectroscopy.
