Description
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors have observed hundreds of compact binary coalescences. Their exquisite sensitivity is achieved through long-baseline interferometry with suspended test masses, among a myriad of other technological aspects. Interferometry is fundamentally limited by the quantum nature of light. At LIGO, quantum noise is mitigated through the injection of squeezed states of light. The squeezing improvement to detector sensitivity is limited by the integration of the squeezer and interferometer.
In this talk, I will summarize research going on in my lab to investigate and improve squeezer-interferometer integration in the presence of mode mismatch. I will also talk about design efforts and challenges for Cosmic Explorer: a proposed future detector with 40 km arms.
