Laser frequency stabilisation with coating-free monolithic optical reference cavities
Optical reference cavities are capable of frequency-stabilising laser light down to the level set by fundamental quantum-mechanical and thermodynamic limits, with wide application in fundamental and applied physics. Today, many of the most frequency-stable reference cavities are limited by the Brownian motion of their Bragg mirror coatings. We demonstrate laser stabilisation using a centimetre-scale monolithic optical reference cavity without the use of Bragg mirror coatings, and examine the prospects for such cavities to operate with state-of-the art frequency stability beyond what is currently possible with coating-based cavities.
