Description

Aversion to mathematics is a recognised and widespread problem that affects students’ confidence, participation, and achievement. Following a review of the literature on mathematics anxiety, we developed an educational program to test the hypothesis that introducing a broader range of mathematical skills relevant to modern science at an early age (7–14 years) can improve students’ attitudes towards mathematics, reduce mathematics anxiety, and prepare students for concepts traditionally introduced at more senior levels.

The program, Maths for Einstein’s Universe (MEU), was developed as part of the Einstein-First initiative and consists of five modules covering Logarithmic thinking, Estimation, Probability, Vectors, and Curved-space geometry. All modules are taught through collaborative activities, games, role-play, and hands-on investigations. Together, these modules form a coherent progression of mathematical ideas that support understanding of contemporary physics, from quantum probability and vector representations to cosmology, climate science, and general relativity.

While closely connected to modern science, the program also aims to provide students with mathematical tools for understanding socially relevant topics, including national budgets, pandemics, risk assessment, and opinion polls. The program has been trialled in Australian schools through approximately 300 hours of classroom teaching, workshops, and outreach activities. Results indicate strong student engagement and significant improvements in students’ understanding of scale, estimation, and mathematical representation.

These findings suggest that broadening the mathematical experiences of young learners can increase confidence, strengthen conceptual understanding of science, and provide students with the quantitative tools needed to understand and navigate the challenges of the modern world.
