Description

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) is under construction to become the world's most powerful gamma-ray observatory. With 64 telescopes of three sizes across both Hemispheres, CTAO will have an order of magnitude better sensitivity than existing instruments. Very-high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics is crucial for understanding the most extreme phenomena in our universe. Observing GeV to TeV gamma rays gives a window into the formation, structure, and acceleration processes involved in environments like Active Galactic Nuclei. It also gives us access to particle accelerators more powerful than any on Earth. Particles of these high energies provide an opportunity to search for evidence of dark matter candidates (such as WIMPs and axion-like particles) and probe physics beyond the Standard Model. CTAO's fast slewing will also allow for rapidly follow up on transient events such as gamma-ray bursts and fast radio bursts. With Australia as a member country of CTAO, we will be part of multi-wavelength campaigns alongside the likes of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory, and multi-messenger campaigns with gravitational wave and neutrino observatories. This contribution will be an overview of the present and future of CTAO. I will provide update on the construction of CTAO, outline its planned key science projects and synergies with other observatories, show results from early science with the first CTAO-North Large-Sized Telescope, and highlight upcoming development milestones.
