Description
The Australian and New Zealand Institutes of Physics (A&NZIP) Condensed Matter and Materials Conference (colloquially known as "Wagga"), began in 1977 as the "AIP Solid Sate Physics Meeting", following an idea from two CSIRO Scientists to create an opportunity in Australia for young researchers to present their research to fellow solid state physicists in a "friendly" environment. While many aspects of the conference have evolved with the passage of time, the most recent "Wagga" which had the name "Wagga2026/AC2MP2026" was a co-join of the 48th Wagga" and the sixth annual Condensed Matter and Materials Conference of the Division of Condensed Matter Physics of the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies of which the AIP is a financial member. Annual "Waggas" were interrupted during the two Covid years (2021 and 2022) as on-line conferences would not have fulfilled the over-riding criterion for the conference. So as we look forward to the 50th "Wagga" to be held in February, 2028, it is of interest to reflect on the history of this most successful physics conference.
As part of a current project within the AIP Condensed Matter and Materials Topical Group, an effort is being made to preserve the history of this conference series by digitising past Conference Booklets and making the files available for storage on the AIP website, as has been achieved recently for the AIP National Congress records. In this poster presentation we shall summarise some of the highlights of this ongoing conference series.
