Description
Stars like the Sun exhibit winds that are driven by thermal pressure, though the mechanism that provides the thermal energy remains unresolved. The energisation process is inherently dynamic, and leaves its fingerprints in fluctuations in the wind. At the Sun, the release of hot, dense plasma from closed magnetic field regions has been proposed as an explanation for compositions in certain solar wind streams, and a source of energy to explain observed temperatures in the open field. In this talk I will present some results of theoretical and computational modelling of this process, its contribution to energising the corona, and opportunities for testing the models against observations.
