Description

Ionising radiation is an important source of unwanted events in cryogenic devices, including superconducting qubits used in quantum computing and cryogenic sensors used in rare-event searches. Tagging these radiation-induced events requires a detector that can operate inside the cryogenic environment without introducing significant heat load or occupying excessive space.

In this talk, we present the design, construction, and characterisation of a compact scintillation detector developed for operation in a dilution refrigerator. The detector is low-cost and compact, has a low heat load, and is compatible with repeated thermal cycling between room temperature and cryogenic temperatures. We will describe the detector concept, component choices, assembly procedure, cryogenic integration, and performance characterisation.

The aim of the talk is to provide a practical recipe for building a small cryogenic scintillation detector. In future experiments at the FM Lab in the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, the detector will be installed close to a superconducting qubit array to tag radiation-induced events in real time, allowing affected data to be flagged, vetoed, or treated separately in the error-correction pipeline.
