Description
The SABRE South experiment at the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) is preparing to become Australia's first deep-underground dark matter direct-detection experiment, using an array of ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystals to test the annual modulation signal reported by DAMA/LIBRA. We present the status of detector assembly and commissioning, from the integration of the liquid scintillator veto and its surrounding shielding through to the installation of the crystal detector modules at SUPL. We also report a measurement of the cosmic-ray muon flux at the laboratory, an important input for characterising cosmogenic backgrounds and validating the shielding and veto design. These results mark the transition from construction to operation and set the stage for first physics data taking. We outline the remaining steps toward full commissioning and the role of the Australian groups in the experiment.
