Description
The bottom and charm quarks are the heaviest quarks which can build hadrons and they have several unique characteristics. Due to their heavy mass, production occur in the hard scattering or the early stages of the parton evolution of a proton-proton collision. Heavy-light meson production (like a $B^+$) is dominated by the heavy parent radiating gluons which form quark pairs, or by additional light pair quark production in the non-perturbative hadronisation phase of the collision. However, in the case when bottom and charm quarks are close to each other in momentum space, the interaction between them can affect the fragmentation process, leading to a shift in the probabilities to hadronise to particular channels. Using results obtained with the Pythia event generator we study these changes in hadronisation fractions. We also investigate how different colour reconnection models affect the production of the $B_c$ meson and the $\Xi_{bc}$ baryon and discuss a newly developed method to measure their production cross sections in data without relying on theoretically predicted branching fractions.
