Description

Actinium-225 (Ac-225) is emerging as one of the world's most important medical radioisotopes for Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT), providing a highly effective treatment for a growing range of metastatic cancers. However, global production remains insufficient to meet rapidly increasing demand, and Australia currently has no sovereign production capability.

This presentation outlines the vision and progress of Southern Cross Medical Radioisotopes (SCMR) to establish Australia's first domestic Ac-225 production capability. The proposed production pathway is based on photonuclear irradiation of radium-226 using high-power electron accelerators, providing a scalable, non-reactor approach to isotope production.

The presentation will discuss the scientific basis of the technology, Australia's opportunity to develop a sovereign medical radioisotope industry, and SCMR's collaborations with Australian universities, hospitals, industry partners and international organisations to accelerate commercialisation.

Establishing a reliable Australian supply of Ac-225 has the potential to improve patient access to advanced cancer therapies, reduce dependence on overseas suppliers, and position Australia as a future supplier of medical radioisotopes to the Asia-Pacific region.
