Description
The LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment is one of the four main detectors at CERN's LHC, distinguished by its forward geometry and precision tracking, which make it especially well-suited to studying the production of heavy hadrons containing charm and beauty quarks. The large mass of these heavy (charm and beauty) quarks, means they must be created in hard interactions during the proton-proton (pp) collision. By probing heavy-flavour production, we can study the underlying QCD dynamics of those hard interactions. A particularly distinctive probe is the doubly-charmed baryon $\Xi_{cc}^{++}$ (quark content ccu), which is unusual in that two charm quarks must be produced and then combine into a single hadron. Using LHCb data collected in the Run 2 and Run 3 data-taking periods, a preliminary measurement of $\Xi_{cc}^{++}$ production is performed as a function of event multiplicity (a proxy for how "busy" the pp collision was), allowing us to investigate how two charm quarks coalesce into a $\Xi_{cc}^{++}$ baryon, and in doing so gain indirect insight into the partonic activity of the proton.
