Description
The Higgs boson plays a unique role in the Standard Model of Particle Physics (SM), which describes the fundamental building blocks of the Universe. Postulated in 1964, the Higgs defied discovery for around 50 years, until it was observed at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012. Much has been learned about the Higgs in the years since its discovery, but much remains to be learned. A next major challenge is to explore how the Higgs interacts (couples) with itself, a question that has fundamental scientific implications. We review what has been learned about Higgs couplings at the LHC, and discuss prospects for studying Higgs self-coupling through di-Higgs production, using datasets already collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and to be collected in the future at the High Luminosity LHC.
