Reaching Southampton:
By Air
Southampton Airport
Southampton International Airport is just a few minutes from the University’s campuses by bus or taxi. It offers a full range of UK domestic flights, as well as services to mainland Europe (Amsterdam, Paris, and Barcelona).
London Heathrow Airport
London Heathrow is located approximately 65 miles from the University of Southampton. The easiest way to reach Southampton is by road, either by car or via National Express, which operates a direct coach service from all Heathrow terminals to Southampton.
London Gatwick Airport
London Gatwick, situated about 87 miles from Southampton, also provides convenient access. A train station in the South Terminal offers services to Southampton Central Station, typically involving one change in London.
By Train
Southampton is well-connected via frequent fast rail to major UK cities, including London, Manchester, and Birmingham. Services from Portsmouth and from Bristol/South Wales also call at Southampton Central. Please refer to https://www.thetrainline.com/ for additional info and tickets.
By car
Southampton is 75 miles (120 km) from London and 21 miles (35 km) from the Channel ports. The M3 and M27 motorways, along with the A34, provide fast, direct access, while the A36 is the main route to the West Country, Bristol, and Wales.
Bus/Local Transport
National Express offers regular coach services from central London, Heathrow and Gatwick airports, Birmingham, Bournemouth, and locations across North England.
Uni-link buses connect the city centre and both the train station and Southampton airport to the University Campuses. The easiest payment option is to Tap on/Tap off using any Credit/Debit card with contactless payment enabled. As long as you keep using the same card, the system will automatically charge the cheapest available daily fare. Remember to tap off before you leave the bus. You can also purchase single fares or day tickets using contactless payment or buy pre-paid tickets from the Unilink Bus app.
