Travel and accommodation

The Summer School will be held in the Wallace building of Swansea University's Singleton Campus. We are able to support the travel, accommodation, and subsistence of researchers in particle physics from the UK and Europe, as detailed below.

Travel

By rail

Swansea is accessible by direct trains from London and Manchester. To plan your route, visit National Rail, which will link you to ticket providers to purchase a ticket.

If you are travelling from Europe, it is worth checking whether an Interrail pass gives better value.

  • For those entering the UK by train, an Interrail Global Pass (4 days in 1 month) will almost certainly be cheaper than buying separate tickets. This will cover all UK trains with no reservation fees; reservation fees are necessary for Eurostar and for high-speed trains in some European countries.
  • For those entering the UK by air (see below), an Interrail One Country Pass (3 days in 1 month) may be cheaper than flexible return tickets from your arrival airport to Swansea.

If your train travel costs more than £350/€350, please contact us before booking. If you need support with routing or booking, or need us to pre-pay for your train tickets rather than reclaiming after the event, please contact us.

By car

Swansea lies near the end of the M4 motorway from the south of England, and the A465 trunk road connecting to the M50 from the West Midlands.

If you need to travel by car, please consider:

  • Is it possible for you to use an electric vehicle? We may be able to reimburse the cost of hiring an EV
  • Would you be willing to car pool with other participants? We can help to co-ordinate this.

By bicycle

If you are a keen cyclist, we are able to reimburse £0.25/mile for travel by bike. For longer bike journeys, we can also fund an additional night's accommodation to give you time to recover ready for the event.

By air

We are not able to reimburse the cost of flights into or out of the UK, and strongly discourage internal UK flights.

The nearest airports to Swansea are Cardiff, Bristol, and London Heathrow. Reaching Swansea from these requires

  • Cardiff: shuttle bus to Rhoose Cardiff International Airport station, and then two train legs, changing at Bridgent.
  • Bristol: Bus to Bristol Temple Meads, and then two train legs, changing at Cardiff
  • London Heathrow: Elizabeth Line to Paddington, and then direct train to Swansea; or bus to Reading, and direct train to Swansea.

In all cases, direct coach services are also available to Swansea.

Please note that Swansea Airport does not offer scheduled flights.

If you need to make an internal UK flight to attend the school, please contact us before booking.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be provided on-campus at Swansea University's student accommodation.
