The closest airports are Nürnberg (Nuremberg) [NUE] and Munich [MUC]. Flights to Frankfurt [FRA] are also possible.
The most convenient connection is to fly into Munich and then take either the transfer service (www.airportliner.com) to Regensburg that takes you directly to your hotel (at present €53 for a single trip, to be booked 48 hours in advance), or the train to “Regensburg Hauptbahnhof” (www.bahn.de). The latter leaves directly underneath the airport. Also see "By Train" below.
From Nürnberg airport we recommend to take the subway to Nürnberg main train station and then the train to Regensburg. (Takes about an hour.)
If you decide to fly via Frankfurt, you can also take the train from Frankfurt airport to Regensburg. The train from Frankfurt airport to Regensburg main station takes 3 to 4 hours. The trains are convenient if on time.
As public transportation and transfer services are good and convenient, we do not recommend to take a rental car to drive from the airport to Regensburg.

For train schedules and bookings see www.bahn.de
The train station is “Regensburg Hauptbahnhof”.
A nation-wide ticket that is valid for one calendar month (e.g., November) for 58€ for all local transport exists (D-Ticket). It will cover busses and local trains (e.g., Nuremberg-Regensburg or Munich-Regensburg) but not long distance trains (e.g., fast Frankfurt-Regensburg connections). So basically everything except IC/EC and ICE trains is covered within Germany. (A regular return ticket from Munich airport to Regensburg is 64€ and includes just that.) The D-Ticket is only available as a subscription. The subscription should be cancelled immediately after the booking, unless you wish to stay for December too. This is easily possible if booked via the above link (valid from 1 November or later/online ticket).

Connections between the university and the downtown area are frequent and convenient. In this case, walking is possible too.
