Travel and Visa Information

Air/Rail – Travel to Kingston is by rail after flying into Toronto Pearson airport (YYZ) or Montreal Trudeau airport (YUL). Train tickets should be booked with VIA Rail in advance at https://www.viarail.ca/en.

Flight to YUL

There is a shuttle bus (20 min) between YUL airport and Dorval VIA Rail station. VIA Rail departs from Dorval to Kingston.

Note: if you are travelling from YUL to Kingston, you want Dorval (and not Montreal) to Kingston, for your VIA Rail ticket. If you are spending time in Montreal before coming to Kingston, you can originate your train travel from Montreal Central Station.

Flight to YYZ

Take the Union-Pearson (UP) express from YYZ airport to Union Station. The VIA train departs from Toronto Union Station to Kingston.

Air/BusFlixBus and Megabus also operate service from YYZ airport to Kingston. Service is infrequent though. VIA Rail is more comfortable, but if you land at YYZ after the last train of the day to Kingston, taking the bus may be an option.

Rental car – Renting a car from YYZ or YUL also works. It's about 3 hours to drive (traffic gods willing) from either airport.

Alternative airports are Ottawa (YOW) and Syracuse, NY (SYR). If you land in Syracuse and drive to Kingston, you will have to cross the Canada/US border and may have additional visa/immigration considerations. The drive from either YOW or SYR airport to Kingston is only 2 hours.

Visas

Please consult this website to find out what visa requirements you may have https://ircc.canada.ca/english/visit/visas.asp. Note: most visitors require an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to land at a Canadian airport.

If you require a letter of invitation, please get in touch with the local organizing committee mchen@queensu.ca or edward.thomas@mcdonaldinstitute.ca.
