Using the Presto Card

There are multiple ways to use a Presto Card; either a physical card, which can be bought online, in ticket vending machines at stations, or stores such as Shoppers Drug Mart; virtual card in the Mobile Wallet, which can be bought through the Presto App, or TTC Tickets. TTC tickets can be bought at vending machines at any station, and can be bought for either a single trip or multiple trips. With all options, there is a 2 hour free transfer period in which you can transfer to any street car, train, or bus, as many times as needed without paying a second time. If using a TTC Ticket, you will be given a paper transfer. Make sure to keep this with you! This is your proof of payment. You will be given a virtual Presto Card, however in case of emergencies you can either purchase a TTC Ticket or simply pay with a debit/credit card. Tap your debit/credit card as you would the presto card.

There are 3 major ways to travel around Toronto; using TTC trains, street cars, and buses. Street cars are more exclusive to the downtown region, so you will not encounter these around campus.

You should tap your Presto card whenever you enter a station to start your journey or board a vehicle from the street. If you are using a bus or street car, you would tap your Presto card onboard the streetcar. If taking the GO Bus/Train, as you would when travelling from Pearson to Campus, you must tap both when you enter and exit the GO system. Please remember to tap when you exit! The fare on the GO system is dependent on time, and therefore if you do not tap when you exit, you will be charged much more than you should be. A simple way to remember is on municpal transit, only tap when you enter. Regional transit you must tap both when getting on and off.

It is highly recommend downloading the ‘Transit Bus & Train Times’ app by TTC beforehand; you can find your route very easily through this app. Simply enter the beginning and end locations, and the app will provide you with the best routes.
