Description
NSERC Chairs for Inclusion in Science and Engineering brings together three leaders to change the face of STEM in the Atlantic region: Dr. Svetlana Barkanova (Physics, Memorial University of Newfoundland), Dr. Kevin Hewitt (Physics, Dalhousie University), and Dr. Stephanie MacQuarrie (Chemistry, Cape Breton University). CISE-Atlantic will present an overview of our initiatives and focus on two important directions including incorporating and accounting for outreach and EDI into the Tenure and Promotion process and leading a call to action to recognize service to the community in the T&P process and “Physics in Rural Classrooms” a key initiative the team is leading. In Atlantic Canada, some of the rural communities do not have physics teachers at all, or the teachers assigned to science or physics classes may struggle with some of the physics topics. By directly connecting presenters from all over Canada with remote schools, we are providing a welcome resource to teachers and exciting role models to students. Where relevant, the curriculum may refer to the regional priorities and include Indigenous knowledge. The program offers four online guest talks per year to address specific curriculum for students in Grades 7 to 11. The talk will outline the motivation, logistics, and possible ways for our physics community to engage in the program.
