Welcome to the Summer school!

Overview of School

Wishing you a warm welcome to the 2024 STFC Nuclear Physics Summer School! We are very much looking forward to meeting you all in Durham in August.

This is a two-week residential Summer school.

Students are expected to attend the entire school and partake in all sessions.

The school is tailored for PhD students typically in their 1st or 2nd year of study.

The full timetable is now available on indico.

There will be Lectures given throughout the Summer school. The topics and lecturers are detailed in the separate Lecturers page.

There will be Group Project Skills sessions, during which students will be assigned into groups and tasked to work together as a team on build a particle detector. The primary goal of these sessions is to work as a team, and no prior hardware experience is needed. At the end of the group projects we will have a Group Project Skills Presentations session where each group will present their findings.

Each student will be expected to present a short talk on their PhD research during the Student Talks sessions, which will take place in the evenings.

On most days with lectures we will also have Tutorials, run by tutors, for students to discuss and reflect upon the material of the lectures. This will be followed by Panels, which are Q&A sessions for students to ask questions and discuss the lecture material with the lecturers.

We will have two interactive Outreach sessions, for training in public engagement skills. And there will also be some Researcher Development sessions, to discuss non-academic aspects of PhD life.

We will have several exhibitors at a Careers Fair spanning a range of professions and companies. We will publish the finalised list of exhibitors soon.

Most days have assigned Free Time sessions too - to relax, exercise or socialise with peers.
